Menorca is a Spanish island on the Balearic Islands. The northern coasts are rugged, the southern area is more uniform and it has sandy types of beaches. We can find more than fifty beaches, some urbanized ones and some absolutely virgin ones, with difficult access. The beaches on the Northern coast and the southern coast are easily noticeable. On the north and center are two big mountains, De Toro and Santa Agueda, and the rest of the territory is plains. It's weather is mediterranean, on the east and at the end of a deep bay is Mahon, the capital of the Island.
Among the most popular and main beaches of Menorca is Cala Galdana, an extensive beach with a perfect semi-circle shape, surrounded by high reefs, full of pines. It's a very picturesque landscape, also protected from the wind. Its sands are white, its waters are clear and the Algendar Gully, which flows in the shape of a small torrent, make this place a big tourist attraction. It was one of the first creeks built in Menorca, with a hotel on the beach. It has a very good infrastructure, offering all types of services. All water sports are possible here, including diving and boat rides.
WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO - HOTELS AND ACTIVITIES
To get accommodations in Menorca, you have a lot of options, because the most important european hotel companies have their branch in Menorca, but you can also find amazing old palaces or big houses remodelated and turn into incredible resorts.
One of the most paradisiac beaches is, undoubtedly, Cala'n Porter, surrounded by an important turist urbanization. On the high reefs there's an assortment of buildings, it's one of the most spectacular views of the island.
This creek with the shape of a shell offers fine white sands and clear waters. It's protected from the wind, and it has space to rest and enjoy the sun. It has one of the most important tourist urbanizations of Menorca.
Another fascinating beach is Cala Pilar, although its difficult to access, it's totally worth it to get there, because we'll be able to enjoy this paradisiac stay. It's virgin, with golden sand and crystal clear waters that will make us feel we're in a fantastic world. Fishing is not allowed, because it's located within the protection area for the marine reserve.
A gorgeous small beach situated on the Ciutadella Bay is Cala Blanca. With an elongated shape and surrounded by great urbanization, its hotel and restaurant infrastructure is quite good. It's got a very active nightlife, with plenty of bars and restaurants. Taking the road that goes along the sea, there's a sand pocket called S'aigo Dolca, which we strongly recommend.
Another quiet, small beach is Cala Morell, which is a creek protected from the north winds by the high cliffs that surround it and by a rocky stretch. I has a sports port for small boats and you can swim in its waters with stone platforms that form stairways. Santandría, very close to Ciutadella, is another beach with a very good hotel and restaurant infrastructure, and a very easy access by car. This creek has a deeply elongated shape, and there's always a quiet area to sunbathe and enjoy a pleasant, relaxing time.
Sa Caleta is another small creek nearby, visited by the Ciutadella people, and towards the North, there are three beautiful beaches within the Los Delfines, Cala Picas and Cala'n Blanes areas, they all have shallow waters with very low swell and many rocks very suitable, thanks to their platform shape, to sunbathe. It's got very good services.
In the westernmost part of the Menorca Island is Cabo de Baños, where you can appreciate the sundowns and the total view of the Ciutadella Bay from its cliffs. If we keep going North, we'll find the end of the urbanized area, where while it's impossible to spend the night, it's worth to explore the virgin areas of the Pont d'En Gil and El Amarador.
To the south of Ciutadella, between Son Saura and Cala Turqueta, is Es Talier, a quaint virgin beach, a true wonder with turquoise waters and fine white sands. Son Saura is the biggest one of the beaches, its waters resemble the ones from the Caribbean, and it has two extensive sand deposits lined with pine trees and, lastly, Cala Turqueta, another virgin beach with clear waters and fine white sand.
