Bathed by the Mediterranean, Mallorca is a wonderful island that offers a huge variety of more than 200 beautiful beaches with fine white sand, and clear waters. Also known as "the island of calmness" is the biggest island of the Spanish Balearic archipelago. Its capital is Palma.

At Palma de Mallorca we find the Palma beach, 4,500 meters long, with a boardwalk surrounded by bars, restaurants and spas. The sea has transparent waters, suitable for all water sports, such as windsurfing, jet skiing, diving, etc. On cooler days, to visit the Cala Major is a must, because it's very well protected and you can enjoy a good swim, despite the fact that the temperature is lowest, and while you're at it, visit the summer residence of the Spanish King and Queen, the Marivent Palace.

WHERE TO STAY AND HOW TO GO - HOTELS AND FLIGHTS

Mallorca offers a wide variety of hotels an resorts, but it gets a little bit overcrowded in summer so it will be better to book your accomodation in advance, and for that purpose checking the web is a good option.

Near the best hotels, in front of the Palma Cathedral, there's an artificial beach that is worth a visit, its name is Can Pere Antoni. Another interesting beach is the Ciudad Jardín Beach, which is surrounded by piers and buildings with gardens, and is frequented by the locals. Another pretty beach, protected by piers is Cala Estancia, with tranquil waters due to the surrounding piers.

The Bahía de Alcudia, one of the most important in Mallorca, goes throughout the bay with its fine texture white sands and clear waters. It's surrounded by hotels and buildings that have preserved the spaces. The services offered to the tourists are excellent. Another tranquil and extensive beach is Es Morer Vermell, very picturesque, a whole side of it is preserved in its natural state.

    ACTIVITIES - WHAT TO DO

In the Alcudia area we can also visit other beautiful beaches like San Pere, very close to the Bonaire sports port and the San Joan beach, both with fine, white sand. This last one has an area covered with vegetation.

One of the most beautiful virgin beaches of Mallorca is, with no doubt, Es Coll Baix, its sand mixed with gravel and one of the most transparent waters ever seen, it's isolated, so after following the Sa Muntanya Road you need to take a detour onto a dirt road to go down to the beach.

Other unmissable virgin beaches are the Es Faralló and S'Illot. The first one is a small virgin creek, 70 meters long, surrounded by thick vegetation. It's the ideal place for diving. S'Illot is more extensive, surrounded by pine trees, with a picnic area and a small restaurant as well.

One of the most recommended beaches for windsurfers is Can Cap de Bou, which is narrow, about 600 meters long with shallow waters. Windsurfing fans love when the wind blows in this area. Another attractive beach is Camp de Mar, which has a small island joined to the mainland by a small bridge you can use to walk to a big restaurant. It has good tranquility despite the booming construction of hotels and buildings in the area.

In the Andratx municipality, we find a big diversity of beaches, small and extensive. One of the most extensive ones is the Sant Elm, almost 130 meters long, with transparent waters and fine white sand. It has excellent services.

Among the smaller beaches, we highlight Es Carregador, with a rocky bottom. It's frequented by the locals and surrounded by summer houses. It's preferred by those tourists who want to get away from the noise, because there's great peace and tranquility there. Cala Petita is even smaller, but likewise tranquil. We could say the most picturesque is Cala Conills, which is covered with gravel and a rocky shore. Among the virgin beaches, Cala Egos and Cala en Basset are plain gorgeous. The first one with a rocky bottom and pine trees, and the second one is located in front of the fabulous Sa Dragonera park. Ses Bassetes, located between the pedestrian crossing and the pier of the Puerto de Andratx, is also worth mentioning.

Another must go to area is the one where the Beaches of Cala D'Or are, there's a great variety in size and landscape, like the Cala Gran, which is well protected by cliffs and is the bigger one of the area. It has a good tourist infrastructure and is surrounded by beautiful homes, very good hotels and a children's park. Another beach, in the residential area is Caló Des Pou, which is very wide, like Cala Gran, approximately 120 meters wide. From it you can see the Es Forti Museum, which is of XVIII Century construction, and is open to the public. It provides a pretty view, with palm trees, and its coast is bathed by clear waters that wet its white and fine sands. It has good tourist services. If you prefer to enjoy a preserved beach of the tourist center, Cala Esmeralda is the best choice. It's narrower than the rest, with white and fine sand, turquoise waters and surrounded by nature. Caló De Sa Torre is another beach with no edifications.

In the Felanitx municipality, there's Cala Serena and Cala Ferrera, both with a great infrastructure, with hotels built right on the beach.
